Breakfast.

We asked the kids the other day to put their hands up if they had eaten breakfast. 10 out of 24 put their hands up. The best breakfast that any of them had eaten was toast with butter and dulce de leche (caramel spread). One kid had eaten chocolate cake. Now it would be a lie if I said I hadn’t ever eaten chocolate cake for breakfast, and at least it is some kind of food to start the day. A couple of them had drank terere (type of tea with orange juice) and one of them had had a coffee. 2 out of 24 kids had actually eaten food for breakfast.

I knew that the kids weren’t eating properly at home but this honestly surprised me. You know the old saying “breakfast is the most important meal of the day”? That saying is bang on! I can’t see how these guys function until 1pm! I know what I’m like if I haven’t eaten before that time of the day. In our family we use the made up word “Hangry”. It means that you are so “Hungry” that you become “Angry”. Your concentration levels drop, holding a conversation is difficult and you become short tempered. This is what happens to adults. Think what this could do for children with small developing bodies and brains. I can see where the difficult behaviour comes from. It is still school holidays at the moment so kids aren’t at school. They tell me that the kids get food at school so hopefully that is the case.
